Qualification for CCW Privileges
To: Retired Sheriff's Peace Officers
Re: Qualification for CCW Privileges
Effective January 2008 the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office General
Orders require all retired members to qualify with whatever firearm
they choose to carry off duty. Additionally the General Orders require
any "honorably retired" Peace Officer who wishes to carry
a concealed firearm outside the State of California to qualify every
year.
General Order 5-03 Section 1 Subsection B Firearms
(Off Duty), allows retired sworn Peace Officers to carry a concealed
firearm outside the State of California. The retired member must
meet the criteria of the LEOSA and have qualified with in one year
with the firearm they are carrying.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office will issue
the retired member, upon successful qualification, a certificate
valid from one year of the date of qualification. This certificate
will state the retired member is an honorably retired Law Enforcement
Officer, he or she meets the criteria for the LEOSA, and the make,
model, serial number and caliber of one gun the retired member may
carry outside the State of California.
General Order 5-04 Section 3 Subsection C Firearms
Qualification, requires every retired member who wishes to carry
a concealed firearm inside the State of California to qualify every
three years. This qualification is the responsibility of the retired
member and the Sheriff's Office will not notify retired members
of their continued need to qualify. Members must qualify with each
firearm they will carry concealed.
Scheduling for retired members to qualify will
be done through the Sheriff's Office Range Master. Qualifications
will normally be completed on regularly scheduled Sheriff's Office
qualification days.
Each retired member will be required to bring
their firearm(s), at least fifty rounds of factory loaded ammunition
and a suitable concealable holster for each firearm fired.
If you have any questions regarding retired member's qualification
or the criteria for the LEOSA you can contact the Range Master,
Sgt Tim Reid, at 650-573-2340.
